Chester, Cheshire -travel information and accommodation

Wonderfully picturesque Chester is a suitable winner of the title of county town of Cheshire. As a world famous heritage site dating back to Roman times the area has plenty to interest its visitors.

When the Romans first settled in Chester it was known as the fortress city of Deva. Today the most noticeable work of the Romans are the magnificent red sandstone city walls, a two mile tour around which makes for a pleasant way to while away an afternoon and explore the city from the viewing towers on route. Alternatively you can pick up a copy of the Chester Millennium Trail at the local tourist office and go on a tour of the citys most famous sites.

Chester is also well-known and much loved for its beautiful high street that is clearly recognisable with its distinctive 13th century two-tier medieval galleried shops that set it apart from other modern high streets, although youll still find plenty of familiar retail names. Theres also the distinctive Eastgate clock, erected in honour of Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee.

The other must see sites include the largest stone built Roman amphitheatre in the country and a stunning 900 year old cathedral. Chester is also a city that knows how to enjoy itself with a social calendar to prove it.

Chesters racecourse has it own agenda of meetings providing a fabulous day out for locals and visitors alike. Theres also the Chester regatta to behold and a whole host of summer festivals and concerts. Apart from the obvious local attractions of Chester it is also the perfect base from which to explore some of the finest areas of the English and Welsh countryside.
